En ce début d’année, l’actualité cycliste est très active, mais c’est l’annonce de la retraite soudaine de Simon Yates qui retient toute mon attention.

Rappelons que Simon Yates a remporté le Giro de brillante façon la saison dernière, avant de signer une belle victoire d’étape sur le Tour de France un mois plus tard.

Yates avait assurément un beau contrat avec son équipe Visma-Lease a Bike pour 2026, avec la reconnaissance et le respect de ses pairs comme un coureur de premier plan, bref, une place enviable au sein du peloton pro. Et à 33 ans, il avait certainement encore quelques belles saisons dans les jambes.

Et pourtant, retraite.

Raison? La fatigue des exigences de la vie d’un coureur pro. La pression constante des « marginal gains », les contraintes de plus en plus lourdes.

Simon Yates n’est pas le premier coureur pro à choisir cette option; au cours des dernières années, on se rappellera de plusieurs cas.

Assiste-t-on à la déshumanisation du cyclisme?

Plusieurs indices nous le suggèrent.

On entend parler de plus en plus d’enjeux de santé mentale dans le peloton, d’obsession voire d’anorexie notamment dans le peloton féminin, la victoire de la nouvelle cadavérique Pauline Ferrand-Prévost sur le dernier Tour n’arrangeant rien, de l’absence des règles chez les femmes tellement les organismes sont poussés, du nécessaire « heat training » pratique que je trouve atroce, du goulag des watts et des séances d’intervalles ultra-calibrées, d’une nutrition micro-mesurée sinon du sommeil, du contrôle continu de la glycémie, sans parler d’un probable dopage aujourd’hui très bien géré et sophistiqué afin de déjouer tous les contrôles, ces derniers étant par ailleurs beaucoup moins nombreux qu’avant.

Sans oublier l’IA, apparemment en hausse partout dans le monde du sport, question d’optimiser partout où c’est possible, même la tactique de course qui ferait l’objet de simulations pour mesurer quelle tactique a la plus grande chance de succès sur une course! Pour Messieurs les coureurs, on n’aura plus qu’à exécuter comme des robots, une fois de plus.

En gros, les coureurs deviennent toujours un peu plus des robots, plus de place à la légèreté, à l’improvisation selon les sensations du moment, plus trop de marges de manoeuvre non plus en cas de mauvais résultats, la patience des employeurs étant moins élastique qu’avant, et les enjeux étant toujours plus importants.

Le plus inquiétant dans tout ca? D’une part, les répercussions de ces tendances chez les cyclistes amateurs, même parmi les plus jeunes, qui reproduisent ces approches de plus en plus souvent.

D’autre part, le truc s’emballe: avec non plus 20 coureurs qui, comme à une époque pas si lointaine pouvaient, rêver de s’imposer au départ d’une course mais bien 100 aujourd’hui, on assiste au spectacle qui est celui du vélo depuis quelques années: homogénéité du peloton, voire mimétisme, prise de risque maxi à l’approche de points critiques, oreillettes aidant, vitesses en hausse et ce qui vient avec, c’est à dire les chutes graves. Ca ne risque pas de s’arrêter puisque pour rester devant, il faudra toujours faire davantage « le métier ». Ou trouver un nouveau truc.
